Critical Thinking is a high-yield topic in SSC CGL Tier-I General Intelligence & Reasoning. It tests your ability to analyse arguments, identify assumptions, draw valid conclusions, and evaluate reasoning rather than merely compute. In the exam, questions from this area appear as syllogisms, statement–conclusion, statement–assumption, cause–effect, strengthening/weakening arguments, and logical connectives. These questions reward precision: a single misplaced quantifier or an overlooked possibility can change the correct answer. This chapter builds from the foundations of critical thinking through core principles of logic, types of statements and propositions, syllogistic and deductive reasoning, logical connectives and truth tables, assumption–conclusion–inference, argument evaluation, cause–effect reasoning, and decision-making/problem-solving. It closes with exam strategies and common traps. To study effectively, first master the vocabulary of logic (terms, propositions, premises, conclusions, validity, soundness). Then practise representing statements in standard forms and using Venn diagrams for syllogisms. For connectives, memorise truth tables and practise translating English sentences into logical form. For assumption and conclusion questions, learn to negate options and test whether the argument collapses. For cause–effect, distinguish correlation from causation and check temporal order and alternative explanations. Finally, solve mixed practice sets under timed conditions, maintaining an error log of traps such as illicit conversion, undistributed middle, and ambiguous terms.
