Reading Comprehension is a high-weightage component of the English Language section in the SBI Clerk examination. It tests your ability to read, understand, analyse, and interpret written text under time pressure. Unlike grammar questions that rely on memorised rules, RC demands active engagement with the passage: identifying the main idea, distinguishing facts from opinions, drawing inferences, understanding vocabulary in context, and recognising the author's tone and purpose. Because RC passages appear in almost every shift and carry multiple questions each, mastering this topic can significantly improve your overall score and accuracy. This chapter is structured to build your skills progressively. It begins with the foundations of reading comprehension, explaining what the section actually tests and how to approach a passage systematically. It then covers the types of passages and question formats you will encounter, followed by active reading strategies that help you retain information while reading. Subsequent sections address specific question types: main idea and central theme, detail-oriented questions, inference and implied meaning, vocabulary in context, and tone, attitude, and author's purpose. The chapter also includes special cases and advanced question types, and concludes with exam traps and time management techniques. To study effectively, read each section carefully, practise the strategies on sample passages, and review the practice questions at the end. Focus on understanding why an answer is correct or incorrect rather than memorising answers. Regular timed practice will help you internalise these techniques and apply them confidently in the exam.
